A few of my favorite books!

Having been married for 14 years now, I can look back and tell you that the books I read early on in our marriage were keys to starting off right.

I read books that taught me about submission--proper, Biblical submission.

I read books that taught me about what men and husbands need.

I read books that helped me be responsible for myself so that my husband didn't have to be responsible for me, too.

Those books are all "old" now.  Many of them were written back in the early 1980's, by women who are now elderly.  The tone in each of them was one of truth in love, helping me to become a woman of strength--but mostly, to be a woman.

I have continued to read books over the years, but I have noticed that the tone in books for women began to take a drastic turn only a few years ago.  I'm sure it has been a slow shift, rather than an immediate change, but they are different.

These new books now have a tone of the power that women have.  They are focused on helping me be a strong woman.  And they tell me how much like a man I can perform in this world.

I am able to be influenced by both sets of books.  One set leads me to hold onto my rights and my wants.  One set leads me to lay down my life for the sake of others.

One set leads me to speak my mind to my husband anytime I feel the need to speak.  The other set leads me to use discretion about when I should speak and when I should hold my tongue.

Again, one set leads me to be a strong woman, while the other set leads me to develop the gentle, quiet spirit of a woman of strength.

Yes, you guessed it--it is the newer books that entice me down the road toward forgetting that I am His created female, while the older books of decades ago, draw me nearer to the Lord and His desires for women.

The older books bring out God's best in me.

Today, I want to share with you some of the amazing books that have positively affected my marriage, personal growth, mothering, and homemaking!  Some of them have been mentioned in other posts, but this is a short list of some of my absolute favorites!

Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman - Anne Ortlund

The Politically Incorrect Wife - Connie Grigsby

Lies Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free - Nancy Leigh DeMoss

Large Family Logistics - Kim Brenneman

Anyone Can Cook - Better Homes and Gardens

A Woman After God's Own Heart - Elizabeth George

The Power of a Praying Wife - Stormie Omartian

And one bonus book, which I'm about to begin reading, but LOVE already!  Another great one by Elisabeth Elliot:

Here's one quote from the book:  “The way you keep your house, the way you organize your time, the care you take in your personal appearance, the things you spend your money on, all speak loudly about what you believe. The beauty of thy peace shines forth in an ordered life. A disordered life speaks loudly of disorder in the soul.”  --Elisabeth Elliot
