Mothering Moments in the Proverbs

As busy mothers we are called to tend to the needs of our children. We plan their meals and seek to give them balanced nutrition for their growing bodies. We are always on the lookout for a bargain in getting the next size pair of shoes or outfit for our growing children.

To keep a clean and orderly home is a priority for many of us. Giving our families a comfortable environment for learning and growing is an important part of our high calling. The education of our children's minds gives us much thought and care, whether we homeschool our little ones, or take an active part in their outside education.

Yes, being a mother is an all-encompassing task as we train, raise, and care for our families.

For a few moments today, I would like to concentrate on the most important priority that the Lord reminds us of in the caring for our children, and that is the care of their hearts. If we care for the bodies, minds, and outward needs of our sons and daughters, but neglect their hearts we have missed the main thing.

We must keep the hearts of our children, and train them how to keep their own hearts. As they grow and learn how to depend upon the Lord for themselves, we must teach them how to be watchful over this most important area of their life.

And all depends upon the keeping of our hearts...the issues of life depend upon it. Our souls and the souls of our little ones are at stake.

How do we guard our hearts?

By walking in close communion and dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ.
By keeping up daily seeking of Him through prayer and the reading of His word.
By being sensitive to the promptings of the Spirit as He quickens us through our consciences to areas of sin in our life.
By not trusting our own hearts, which will deceive us and lean towards that which displeases the Lord.
By looking to Jesus who in all things pleased the Father.

So today, dear mother, may I encourage you to refocus on those things that have slid around the home, the needful schooling, the schedules that can bring more organization, etc.

But, in all your doings, keep at the forefront, at the top of the list, the hearts of those under you.

The hearts of your flock around you, tend to those first and foremost. Lead your little ones to the One who alone can truly keep their hearts.

Interactive iPad Apps for Preschoolers

I found some wonderful, interactive book applications for the iPad that Ella adores. They are fun and beneficial for teaching lessons on emotions such as fear and courage. You can also create lessons using colors and patterns used in the books.

A Monster at the End of the Book is a great app for preschoolers. Your little ones will be delighted as they tickle Grover until he doubles over in laughter. Knock down blocks and bricks as Grover tries to stop children from getting to the end of the book.

Another Monster at the End of This Book includes Elmo. Same concept, but Elmo adds bravery and fun to an already fantastic interactive application.

Little Lilly's Touch Book for preschoolers is an interactive book about a little girl who loves to boogie barefoot, but hates the feeling of just about everything she touches. A great app for little ones with sensory issues.

Simplicity...this is one of the greatest gifts God gives to us. To find pleasure in simple things can bring us such joy, enrichment, hope, fulfillment, and peace!

Sometimes, we, as home schooling mothers and wives, can get to "bustling about" in such a way that many of the small blessings and gifts the Lord is trying to send us each day can whisk right by, unnoticed by us, as we multi-task, manage, do and un-do, plan, go, come, arrange, listen, tell, help, offer, give, and more.

Getting too caught up in the busy-ness of modern life can impede our journey and stifle our contentment...in fact, it can leave us feeling quite restless, confused, depressed, and overwhelmed.

It is so important, to slow down "Be still and know that I am GOD" Psalm 46

The truth is, that if we look for it, we can find much joy in simplicity all around us each and every day...in our marriage, in our faith, in our home, in our schools...it is there...waiting like an unopened package with a beautiful ribbon and a tag that reads:

TO: YOU

LOVE: GOD

The simple pleasures enjoyed can vary from woman to woman. The point is, try not to lose sight of them, what ever they are, for part of "keeping our eyes on Jesus" requires our senses to be "alert" and our minds to be "at rest" and our hearts to be "open," so that we can be blessed and receive all graces needed to carry out our duties in our vocations with a grateful heart.

I took the opportunity to teach my children a lesson using photos sent to be by a friend.

School doesn't have to be this formal and rigid exercise. You can use anything to teach a child valuable lessons.

Since most children are visual, this lesson scored high in mommy points.

I shared how having less is more.
A simple life is pleasing unto God.
I spoke on the importance of spending time together as family doing creative and exciting things.
How having balance is essential to maintaining self-control and peace.
Respect for authority has declined drastically in the last five decades.
Creativity and child-like imagination has decreased considerably with increased technology and the fast paced lifestyle of our society.

Recipe for a Better Mom

Combine kisses and hugs in mixer.

Mix on low speed until blended.

Transfer to a tin-foiled baking dish.

Shape into a loaf.

Bake @350 degrees for 1 hour.

Drain off: anger, anxiety, self-pity, complaining, impatience,
hatred, and unforgiveness.

Return to oven and continue cooking until done.

To season: add love, compassion, understanding, patience, and discipline.

New Year Resolution for The Christian Marriage

As we peer into the New Year (some of us are looking ahead through a Vitamin D Deficient haze :-), we may be anxious or hopeful.

We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future. Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever." This verse is such a comfort to me in our constantly changing world!

The New Year is a wonderful time to recommit to our marriages and seek God for His strength and wisdom. Ephesians 5 tells us that marriage is a picture of Christ and the church (however imperfect that picture may be). Yes, you are right at the center of God's will when you are committed to strengthening your marriage and seeking God's love for your spouse. God created marriage for His purposes and plans.

When our marriages are "good" and we are feeling happy, we don't need God's love for our husband, do we? However, when our relationship is going through the hard slog of misunderstanding, irritation, and discouragement we realize that without God we would feel nothing for the man we vowed to love and honor.

"Give us, O Lord, steadfast hearts, which no unworthy thought can drag downwards; unconquered hearts which no tribulation can wear out, upright hearts, which no unworthy purpose can tempt aside...

Remember this (coming from an old married lady of 30 years) that the hard times in life always feel like they will never end. You think to yourself, "I've been miserable forever...I have never been happy in this marriage."

Sister, when you catch yourself thinking this way, remind yourself that your marriage coach, who is older and much much wiser (that would be me :-), told you that you would have days like this. Remember that I told you they really don't last forever. Hang on!

Use this brand new year to commit to praying for your marriage. Your marriage (in some ways) stands separately apart from your husband and yourself. You can do things for the good of "the marriage" even when you don't have loving emotions toward your husband.

"Your Father in heaven knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him." Matthew 6:8

Bathe your marriage in prayer. Pick a specific time in your day when you will pray for your marriage. You may have to link that time to something you do every day so that you will remember to do it (for example, when you are driving back from dropping your children off at school each day or when you are in the shower each morning).

...bestow upon us, O Lord our God, understanding to know Thee, diligence to seek Thee, wisdom to find Thee, and a faithfulness that will finally embrace Thee." -Thomas Aquinas

Prayer calms our emotions, clarifies our thoughts, and brings us the peace so necessary to the hard work of living. Prayer is the essential breath of the christian woman.

When you pray for your marriage and seek God's love for your husband you are choosing great good for future generations. Every single child in your family and the children born to your children will be influenced by your decision to work through the tough times and give God the glory in the good times.

Build your marriage in the new year. Pray.

You Are Beautiful

I found a piece of paper above a sink in the doctor's office that read: You Are Beautiful. I thought it ironic that it was strategically placed where the mirror should have been.

God is not concerned with our outward appearance as much as He is with our heart, dear ladies. We are to inwardly reflect a beauty and warmth that can only come from the mirror of His word.

I know a woman who goes unloved by her family because of her bitter and abusive soul. Although she is quite beautiful, she is unattractive. She wears the right clothing, covers herself in the proper places, and understands the Bible with her head and not her heart.

The husband does not show this woman any form of affection because of pain and disillusionment. The children make great efforts to stay away from harsh lectures and confusing mood swings. She is not trusted; her children do not feel safe or loved.

The pain that penetrates this woman's life seems unbearable, but the saddest part is that all she has to do is make a choice to believe God.

Look at yourself through the mirror of God's word and believe that You Are Beautiful. Once you believe, He will take your ashes and exchange them for something of beauty.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

Play at Home Mom is one of those sites I can't get enough of. A group of mothers share tips and creative outlets for moms and their children. I recently made my own busy boxes for a rainy day. I love how simple and practical they are. It had to be a mom with little ones that came up with busy boxes.

It's the beginning of a new year with fresh voices that will encourage and strengthen your walk with God.

I'm happy to announce that Hal and Melanie Young from Raising Real Men have joined the FAR team. They will share biblical and practical information helping you raise godly young men.

Jenny from A Mother's Heritage is a lovely wife and homeschooling mother of seven who will be bringing you monthly articles entitled Mothering Moments in Proverbs.

Recently, Mrs. June Fuentes invited me to join Raising Homemakers as a monthly contributor where you'll find me writing articles to further encourage your mothering and homemaking skills. A hat tip to June who has continually blessed my life with sweet opportunities to grow as a mother, wife, homemaker, and writer.

My hope this new year is to branch out a bit on the topic of special needs introducing you more and more to our life with Ella. I'm saving up for a camera so that I can take photos and record videos of therapy sessions, school lessons, and daily activities.

FAR is striving to bring you how to articles and videos sharing tutorials that will enhance your experience as a homemaker, wife, and mother. I've also been praying for a creative sort that will teach ladies easy and frugal design tips for the home.

I did not finish The 12 Days of Blogging Community Series, so I hope to do so this coming week. Many writers/bloggers have inspired me, making it appropriate that I mention their contribution in my life.

I want to thank all of you for supporting FAR through comments, Facebook, and personal emails sharing testimonies of what God has done in your life. I love hearing from you.

Begin is such an important word. Are you dreaming about being a better mother and getting things done? It's so easy to dream, but a lot harder to do something.

I've learned a secret to accomplishing the thing you dream about doing. Simply begin. Begin with that first step. In fact, nothing happens without that first step.

And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. Judges 10:18

You might begin by writing a short list of mothering goals for the new year. Keep it simple and realistic. It may look something like this:

Schedule Changes in Your Homeschool for a New Year

Coming off of Christmas break and entering into a New Year means a new semester for many homeschoolers. Even if you are not entering a new term or semester the mindset remains that a New Year brings about new beginnings. The excitement to ring in a New Year is often a catalyst for reviewing and refining our school schedules. So how do we know when it's time for a schedule change?

Change if....

your homeschool feels stagnant.
your curriculum is not working out for your family.
your schedule is causing too much stress for you or your children.
you have a child who is struggling.
you have a child who is advancing faster than his curriculum will allow.
your homeschool is not defined by love, laughter, and then learning.
your homeschool is putting strain on your marriage.
you do not have time to snuggle and play with your children.
your children do not have time to play and think freely throughout the day.
you are controlled by your schedule instead of controlling your schedule.

Essentials to add in to your homeschool...

Morning devotions
A teacher that walks with the Lord.
Read aloud books
Play time
Tea time: a small break you take together and discuss the day, goals, or just sit and laugh
House Rules
A family cause: such as helping the homeless, joining a ministry at your church, sponsoring a child
Chores for everyone so all feel a part of the family and an important part of running the home.
Life skills
Character training

It is your homeschool. The students are in your charge to direct, guide and cherish. All families are different and have different needs. Do not model your schedule after another homeschool family. You are not another homeschool family. Pray about how God wants your day structured. Seek wise counsel from experienced homeschool moms always remembering not to be afraid to modify to suit your family.

My heart cries for home; for a culture that is still with me and a people I cannot forget. I can hear lively conversations in the kitchen, the radio playing softly, and windows that beckon me to look in wonder at God's creation.

Although my heart aches for a place that I cannot return to right now, my husband and children look to me to build a home with the things that I remember as lovely and good: Every room was neatly decorated, the kitchen was lively and open to the weary, the house was always clean and free of clutter, I was loved unconditionally, disciplined when necessary, and given my share of hard work.

As a wife and mother, I lay hand to the task set before me, and there are days I stand in awe that God would think me suitable to raise a household for Him.

I get up and begin: "Good morning, baby girl. How are you today?" She hugs me and I breathe in her scent. The boy enters with a grin and hug and whispers, "What's for breakfast, Mommy?" I smile. Another girl enters and shares a nightmare. I listen and nod. My husband kisses me goodbye and I don't see him again until evening.

I'm building a home with every story, nightmare, kiss, hug, and smile.

Right here; Right now. This is home.

5 Tips to Helping Your Daughters Relate, Relax, and Release

1. Sewing

Great for hand and eye coordination (fine motor skills). Helps with concentration and ability to focus. I use a template to trace and cut out the front and back of felt-shaped animals. My girls sew the two pieces together by using a blanket or regular stitch. We leave an opening, put in some stuffing, and viola - a self-made stuffed animal.

Surrendering Our Days to Christ

As mothers, we have been given a privilege by God that has not been granted even unto the angels.

Wives and mothers today are yearning for Christ. They want to “keep their eyes” on Jesus and make Him the center of all that they think, say, and do.

But, how does one do this when children are leaping off of the back of the couch, laundry is piled up higher than a mountain, and “Junior” is in the 5^th grade; reading at a 2^nd grade level?

How does a mother at home, who is facing these sorts of challenges, continue to stay connected to God and focused on Christ throughout her day?

It helps to remember that we have within us the sacred peace and joy of the Trinity. As baptized believers, He has come to abide in us that we may abide in Him! This means that deep within us, at all times, and even when the outward appearance of our day is wrought with stress or chaos, we have a respite, a secret place to which we can go to rest. The Lord awaits us there and has promised to comfort and sustain us.

Many times, we lose our way and find ourselves lacking spiritual enrichment. We convince ourselves that we can’t “find time” to pray or take a few moments to simply “be still” so that we may “know that He is God."

As the New Year approaches, let us ponder the Lord’s words in Scripture, “Come to me, all ye who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Let us consider how it is that we can “come to Jesus” during our days of homeschooling, tending to our children, nurturing our marriages, and carrying out the myriad tasks and duties that beckon our attention on a regular basis in the average day.

It is because HE LIVES within our souls! He is never burdened. He does not grow weary. He never EVER turns away from us, nor forsakes us in our hour of need. He is there…within us…always waiting, always willing, and always hoping that we will simply “turn our thoughts” unto Him, so that we can find peace, respite, and JOY, at all times, no matter what circumstance has been presented to us.

While it is nice to have a time set aside of prayer and good to keep journals or take part in groups that help us be accountable for our spiritual life, it is good to read worthwhile literature and books that help nurture our minds, bodies, and souls…but even when we can't find time to do those things...

Our days STILL belong to God. We can trust that He is good; and therefore, whatever He allows is for OUR good. This can be difficult to embrace when the situation at-hand seems to be anything but Divinely Inspired. But, trust, we may...for God has promised that everything that happens to us is for His glory and our Salvation.

Therefore, we can completely surrender our days to Him and THANK Him for whatever that day may hold...even when it doesn't "look" like a good day.

Kelly from Generation Cedar suffered the loss of her home, possessions, friends, and a community that she loved this past April.

Although she will not be in her new home this Christmas, Kelly's understanding of God's sovereignty is a fresh reminder of the peace in knowing He holds all things in His hand, and a new appreciation for the simple, important things in life - the people in it.

You may be losing your home, family, and friends for different reasons. I know that our economic condition has set people back so fiercely that it saddens me to see hundreds of "For Sale" signs surrounding my region. Foreclosure stickers stamped onto doors that represented precious memories for families who are now forced to leave and never look back.

Yet with all the fear and uncertainty that comes from living in this world, we can all be reminded of the peace in knowing that He holds all things in His hand.

Teaching Hospitality

The definition of hospitable according the online Merriam Webster Dictionary is:

a : given to generous and cordial reception of guests

b : promising or suggesting generous and cordial welcome

c : offering a pleasant or sustaining environment

How do we teach our children to treat guests in a hospitable way? Quite simply, by example. If a friend were to come knock on our door unannounced, would a cordial, generous and pleasant environment greet this friend?

You may have toys on your floor and crumbs on your table, but a heart full of love and generosity will be a pleasant environment to an unannounced guest. Hospitality has as much to do with our heart attitude as linen napkins and a cup of tea.

Ways to show hospitality:

Offering the men who work on your roof, windows or lawn a cool drink or a snack.
Keep your home orderly, so you never feel hesitation inviting someone in for coffee or tea. Your home does not have to be perfect.
Make a production out of welcoming your husband home for the evening.
Instruct your children to offer your guests or their guests a beverage or something to eat. Allow your child to serve your guests or their guests.
Have a tea party! No need to make it formal or costly. Tea parties are a wonderful to reinforce etiquette and proper hostess skills.
Be on the look out for times you can invite someone in your home or on your porch. A neighbor who lives alone or neighborhood children needing a safe and cordial place to play are good starters.

Once I was so unprepared to offer love right away because my house was a mess and I wasn't dressed for the day that another lovely neighbor showed love and hospitality to the poor woman whose husband just went into the hospital.

I could have been a testimony for Christ and to my children, but it was a missed opportunity because I did not have a hospitable attitude. Hospitality is an attitude and not the cleaning and prep work we do before company arrives. Let's show our children open arms to God's beloveds.

Mothering Moments in the Proverbs

Death and life are in the power of the tongue:

and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Proverb 18:21

We all grew up with the phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words never will." Have we ever stopped to consider how false that little childhood phrase is?

Our Lord tells us differently in the Proverb quoted above. Our tongues have great power...to build up or tear down.

The question for today is: Are we tearing down our children with our words?

We get tired, we get frustrated and overwhelmed and it boils over with statements like:

How many times do I have to tell you?
You are so clumsy, watch what you are doing!
What am I going to do with you?
You got that problem wrong AGAIN?
When are you going to learn?

These are just a few of the things that might come out of our mouth in exasperation on any given day.

Or how about just a harsh response to an accident that might occur at the table?

May the Lord purge these negative words and attitudes from our lips and hearts, and replace them with the fruits of His Spirit.

But, it is not enough to just not tear down, we must build up. This is something I have to daily seek to apply in my home.

Do my children feel like all I ever see is what they didn't do right, instead of encouraging them in what they did well in?

As I consider this verse today, I am reminded of the immense impression I am making by every word that comes out of my mouth in this home.

Dear Mama, what kind of fruit are we eating in our homes? Is it the fruit of discouraging words, belittling words, unkind, criticizing words? If it is, we need to begin leaning on Christ for His grace.

Is it the fruit of sweet words, full of praise and encouragement for our little ones? Are we lovingly coming alongside our children in our gentle training and instruction of their dear hearts?

May it be so more and more each day.

12 Days of Blogging Community - Day 5

A geneticist came to speak to me while I was breastfeeding Ella in NICU. No privacy; no warning; no tact. I remained quiet as he spoke. I recall he found my silence unnerving because he asked if I understood English. A lady nearby was offended with the remark and called out: "She speaks better English than you do." I did and I smiled.

I began blogging as a way to heal and understand what seemed like an impossible journey. Windmills and Tulips was and is my first blog. I closed it for a while because I lost my purpose and vision for the blog. I think the pain was too great.

Enjoying the Small Things gave me perspective into a woman who mourned the unexpected, but decided to write about the good things of life. Some have criticized her for living in a fantasy world, but I later came to understand that she purposely decided to keep any sad moments for family and close friends.

Kelle's account of her own birth story is one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read.

Lady Lydia has inspired my love for motherhood and homemaking in such a unique and challenging way. Her articles at Home Living are convicting, warm, and straight forward. I consider her my mentor and friend.

I contact Mrs. Sherman on occasion with questions regarding staying home to blogging. I respect her ability to blog with one purpose in mind: to teach women how to love and keep their homes. If you peruse her blog, you will note that she remains true to God and the Titus 2 mandate in all she writes and shares.

Ladies Against Feminism is another wonderful website founded by Mrs. Lydia Sherman and Mrs. Jennie Chancey in 2002 as a way to publish thoughtful, biblical responses to feminism and to encourage other women in their God-given roles.

I recently turned to Mrs. Sherman when several of my friends were violated online. She graciously wrote an article to help women understand the pros and cons to blogging as well as sharing too much information online.

Holiday Tea

The frail widow always smiles brightly as you walk by her yard, but every night she lays awake for hours thinking about the coming days without family or friends.

You are inwardly irritated at the loud woman who tells obnoxious jokes in Sunday school and interrupts the speaker at inappropriate times not knowing that she secretly dreads opening the door to her apartment and facing another Sunday afternoon alone.

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2 (ESV)

Have you ever been lonely? I have. It's awful. Have you visited a church and stood awkwardly in the foyer hoping against hope that someone would introduce themselves to you? Been there, done that as well.

When we reach out to others and take the time to ask them into our home, we build up the church of Christ, we share Christ with those who don't know Him, and we shine the light of a Christian home into a darkened world. You don't have to have a perfect Christian home to practice hospitality either...in all our weakness and imperfection, Christ is still there.

My husband and I made a commitment many years ago to invite people into our home regularly. It still does not come easily or naturally to me, but I do it because ( if you read that verse up there) you will see that it is a command….yes, my dear sister, God expects it of us!

Home for the Holidays

Happy Hospitality Hint #1:

Remember that having people over does not have to include a full meal. Popcorn and iced tea, dessert and coffee, sandwiches and carrot sticks, or soup and bread are all delicious ways to invite people to relax and talk in the comfort of your home. I believe that we should offer something to those who come into our home because this invites them to stay awhile.

Hospitality is not entertaining. If you don’t have a beautiful home or fancy food, you can breathe a sigh of relief. God doesn't only command those of us with large beautiful homes to practice hospitality, He commands it of all of us. And, may I say, that our family has always been blessed when we open our home to others. Always!

Happy Hospitality Hint #2:

Ask the Lord to help you find your own special niche as you minister to others. As a single woman you may find that having younger women over for a snack and game night works well with your schedule. As a family you may realize that you are especially equipped to minister to teens in the neighborhood.

Some of us love an “open home” policy where others are always welcome to drop by. Others of us prefer to offer overnight hospitality to the missionaries that visit our church. The Lord uses each of us differently to minister to others through our homes.

Keep It Simple – Hosting is about the experience, not the presentation. Prepare a meal that allows you time to visit, not one that takes you away from your company.
Be Real – Just be yourself. Are you an introvert like I am? You will probably enjoy the one on one time spent talking with guests instead of the hustle and bustle of a crowd. God made you that way. You may find that having a few people over at a time works best.
Allow others to help – If guests ask what they can bring…allow them to bring something!
Make the time as informal as possible-this way you will find it easier to practice hospitality more often. Although hospitality is my excuse for cleaning more thoroughly than usual and for setting out special decorations or tableware, we also try to be “hospitality ready” just by keeping the house picked up and having a heart ready for anyone.

Happy Hospitality Hint #3:

Practice a few “no fail” recipes or meal plans which you can put together quickly whenever there is a need. Keep the ingredients on hand in your cupboard and freezer. This is like saying to God, “See Lord, I'm willing!”

Prepare the Children – Our children can learn to bless others through hospitality. Tell your children how their welcoming smile and kindness ministers to those who come in the door. If your six year old wants to rattle on and on about his Lego creation to the elderly friend who is coming for lunch, reassure him that he will get his opportunity after your guest is greeted, her coat is hung up and the adults have chatted. Coach your children beforehand about what questions they can ask others. Let them know that being interested in other people is a wonderful way to be a blessing.
Pray – Ask God to use your unique personality, budget, house and family to minister to others. Ask Him to help you touch the people who enter your home.

Children who grow up in a welcoming, hospitable home are often proud of the fact that their home is an oasis in a world full of lonely and hurting people.

May the Lord bless oh-so-human families and be glorified as we serve others through our homes.

I have a special place in my heart for Heather from Raising Mighty Arrows. She has been a source of support and encouragement since meeting this past year. I have had the privilege of watching her grow as a writer and blogger. She is a lovely woman and friend.

Heather is a city girl at heart 'gone country! She's been married for almost 5 years with two young children. She had no idea the things that would soon begin to take place in her life. For instance, Heather had the wonderful privilege of trying handmade soaps for the first time earlier this year.

She was convinced that she never wanted to use store bought soaps again! So much so that with a lot of research and a little help from those that are more experienced than Heather, she recently started making her own handmade soaps. She loves the feeling of accomplishment, creativity, and excitement while making every new batch of soap. She enjoys experimenting with colors, scents, and recipes to make the 'perfect batch' every time.

Thus, the birth of Vintage Handmade Soaps. Heather is not only making soaps for family and friends to enjoy, but she also wanted you to have the opportunity of trying them out yourself. The Bread of Life

I'm sitting at a nearby Barnes and Noble having a cup of tea. Ear phones in place while working; I'm currently listening to Dawn's Pride and Prejudice which pleases my soul. I can still hear, however, the faint churning of a coffee maker and the chatter of people happily sipping coffee.

Four college girls catch my eye sitting Indian style on the floor with their laptops ready to create something that will change the world. Such eager and young faces; fearless and able to tackle the world with their dreams.

I can't help but wonder if their dreams glorify God or man. Silly are my thoughts, but nonetheless they enter with a desperate plea for my own children to honor God with their lives.

The endless prayer of a mother's heart that begs for no greater joy than to know her children walk in truth.

"To know much and taste nothing - of what use is that?"

Preparing Daughters

Preparing our daughters to be corner pillar stones is important to their well being (Psalm 144).

Here are some things that are incredibly needed for their success:

Train them up in the womanly arts. A young lady should know how to work with her hands at an early age. Learning a craft/skill opens the door to opportunities which may allow her to contribute financially to the home.

A daughter who is trained in the womanly arts is an incredible asset to her mother and father. Mother and daughter can work along side one another chatting and thinking of ways to help daddy become successful.

Why Do You Blog?

I am particular with the blogs I read frequently; mainly because I don't have the time to read everyone.

I find that my favorite blogs/writers are ones that have a clear purpose to their writing. I enjoy visiting friends who write short, pithy posts that are useful in helping me acquire the skills I need to be a better woman, wife, mother, and friend.

A long post (deep breath) should be clear and helpful; don't ramble on or get sidetracked - you'll lose your readers within seconds.

So, if you're a blogger who is seriously loving to write; ask yourself a simple question that will bring clarity and direction to your writing:

Why do I blog?

Make a list detailing reasons why you blog. If your list is long, narrow it down to 5 points.

For example:

Honor God
Become a better writer
Earn an Income
Write an eBook/Book
Mentor other women

We all need time to grow. Once you understand why you blog, clarity and better writing will be the result.

I was so busy this past week with Thanksgiving, family, and friends that time flew by.

We decorated our Christmas tree and rearranged the living room furniture to make the house look more pleasant and welcoming. It turned out lovely. Pictures are coming!

Mocking Michelle

I read somewhere on a "Christian" site that Michelle Duggar must be mentally sick to be having her 20th child. They went on to say things like:

The nerve of that woman; doesn't she understand how much of a burden she is placing on her body. To think that she would lay down her life for the chance to have another baby makes me laugh. She's ridiculous.

It is obvious that they were intentionally laughing at/mocking Michelle.

My thoughts regarding Michelle Duggar are one of reverence. I have a deep admiration and respect for her.

She is a woman just like I am. She stumbles out of bed, grows weary, grows old, but her faith far exceeds my own. We cannot understand faith and courage like this because it is rarely seen in today's society.

Yet we applaud little girls in tiaras, stand in line to see the next Twilight saga, make excuses for our disobedience, and mock a woman for her willingness to lay down her life and body to have another child.

The nerve of us.

Greetings, my dear sisters in Christ!

It is with great joy and appreciation that I offer my first of many posts on Far Above Rubies. I am thankful for the welcome I have received and for the invitation to be a part of this wonderful ministry with Jasmine.

I look forward to share the things our Lord places upon my heart with you and getting to know you as time goes on.

Truly, the family is the heart of the church and the church is the heart of the family. Restoring family life is key to restoring marriages, communities, nations, and the world-at-large. In this busy and often chaotic world; even within Christian households, parents and children are coming and going, rushing and running, and spending so much time apart in order to meet the demands of personal schedules that a true “home life” is in danger of becoming obsolete.

The Lord has given us a family to love. All that we need in order to find fulfillment in life is under our own rooftops! Community is good and it is a blessing. We should obey the Scriptures and Commandments and worship with our fellow believers.

We should open our doors willingly and eagerly in order to show hospitality to friends, extended family, and, yes, even a stranger, if God sends one to us. (Hebrews 13:2) And, from time to time, we should go forth outdoors and into the neighboring areas in order to serve our fellow man.

However, in the day to day of our family life journey, we will do well to spend more time together as a family; and to use that time wisely so as to enrich the body, mind, and soul of each dear family member.

Restoring the family begins at home!

We must be there and spend time there. Modern and secular society has duped us into believing that we must continually be involved outside the home in order to find personal gratification and satisfaction in life. This is an erroneous idea, and sadly, even Christians have fallen into the trap of believing it. Decide today to stay home more often and find enjoyment in the company of your family.

Treat one another with respect, using words that edify, rather than insult or degrade; as is a common form of “sarcastic humor” today.

Creating a comfortable atmosphere will encourage your family to spend more time at home. A side effect of being on the go all the time, is that things begin to fall apart around the house. If no one is there to keep up on things, and "tend the hearth" so-to-speak, then the atmosphere will quickly begin to feel cluttered, un-kept, and stressful. By taking time to create the "feel" in your home that makes you want to be there, you can begin restoring family life.

Place candles or soft lights here and there, and use them...don't just save them for when guests visit! Treat your own family to those warming scents and glows...you'll see people start to linger and chat because the atmosphere invites them! Lovely background music, a tray of snacks to the side, interesting and inviting books, puzzles, and games placed on shelves or tables all beckon family members to gather together and enjoy their time at home.

Make your decorations, your activities, and your efforts speak to the “heart” of your family. Have company, take on projects or special crafts together…cook up a feast in the kitchen; bringing children along-side to help.

Each small attempt you make to spend more time together and “restore the family” will bring God’s blessings upon you.With a love of God in our hearts and a desire to do all for His glory, we can restore the nation, one family at a time!

The Family Daughter Review and Giveaway

The Family Daughter by Sarah L. Byrant and KBR Ministries is one of the best books I have ever had the privilege of reading. I can honestly say this book encouraged me to pursue God's work as mother and wife with renewed vision.

The Family Daughter is written to encourage young ladies to become vital cornerstones in their father's home (Psalm 144).

I can't explain how much this young woman and writer impacted me as a mother - except to say that I was convicted, elated, motivated, encouraged, and humbled the entire read. I guess the reason for this is because Sarah is so transparent with her own struggles and victories as a young woman that I couldn't help but understand her love for God and family. She did not share unrealistic goals of perfection nor was there any judgement sensed in relation to a young woman's pursuit of godly womanhood.

Numerous testimonies are shared throughout the book by young ladies who paint a true and sincere picture of the struggles and triumphs of surrendering to God and His will for godly womanhood.

The perspective from which the book was written is based on the following scriptural beliefs:

- Women were created to be a help-meet to their husband if married (Titus 2:5), or serve their father if unmarried (Genesis 24).

- An unmarried daughter should remain under the authority of her father until he passes that authority to another godly man God has prepared for her (Genesis 2:24 and I Cor. 7:36-38).

- An unmarried daughter should follow biblical models of daughter-hood by honoring parents (Exodus 20:12), encouraging her family (Psalm 144:12), and remaining spotless from the world in thoughts, conduct, and reputation (James 1:27).

Under a Father's Tutelage

While at home, young maidens have the great honor of being under a godly father's tutelage.

There are some specific, practical ways daughters can serve their fathers in preparation for their own husbands and homes.

If father has a home business, a daughter might be able to help with:

typing invoices
writing letters
sorting mail
ordering and purchasing office items
making and receiving phone calls
organizing his office
paying bills

If a daughter is not able to serve her father in a family home business, she can still honor him in everyday areas (The Family Daughter):

Slip a note in his suitcase or Bible
Surprise him by doing extra jobs
Greet him every morning
Greet him pleasantly when he arrives home from work
Make his breakfast and pack his lunch for the weekdays
Keep the house neat and orderly
Be on time for meals
Help mother while he is away
Pray for him often
Bring him his coffee
Give him hugs
Comb his hair
Care for younger siblings

Read Genesis 24 and 29

It is vitality important that a daughter sees mother serving father. A daughter confused will not be able to carry out the noble task of being a wife and homemaker without tremendous consequences.

It may seem a daunting task to enable our daughters to be helpmates when we ourselves are still learning, but it can be done.

Pray for a mentor; seek out godly resources, refrain from watching what is not conducive to an atmosphere of virtue and nobility.

One last thing, women are extremely intelligent, component, and strong, but it is only in submission that we radiate God's glory.

A Small Group of People

This Thanksgiving read about this small group of people who did, indeed, face great dangers with "answerable courages." Illness almost decimated everyone that first winter and when spring came the remaining survivors faced warmer weather pale and hollow-checked and very glad to be alive.

When they were finally able to get a harvest of food, the arrival of a ship full of people with few provisions forced them to live (again) on very little in order to feed the newcomers. They entered into what they remembered as the starving time where each person only had a few kernels of corn to eat.

Around our dinner table on Thanksgiving Day I place a few kernels of corn by each plate and ask each person to recount what they are thankful for. I tell the story of those other Christians; those Separatists...or Pilgrims who lived through such hardships yet still are remembered for their words of hope and gratefulness to God.

Our family has collected a number of good books on the Pilgrims because much of their history is being lost or rewritten.

The Landing of the Pilgrims (Landmark Books) by James Daugherty is a young adult book which quotes the Pilgrim fathers. It can be enjoyed by all ages.

Stories of the Pilgrims (Yesterday's Classics) by Margaret Pumphrey guides early elementary children through the first days in Scrooby England to Leyden Holland and, finally, to Plymouth Massachusetts.

Two beautifully illustrated books which are full of wonderful information are N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims(text by Robert San Souci) and Three Young Pilgrims by Cheryl Harness.

Don't miss Of Plymouth Plantation (Dover Value Editions) by William Bradford which is considered to be the authoritative account of the early years of the Pilgrims. Mr. Bradford wrote his book thirty years after they arrived on the rocky New England coast of America.

So, this Thanksgiving, as you sit down with family and friends, enjoy the pumpkin, acorn squash, zucchini, leeks, corn, maple syrup, and cranberries that were all discovered in America.

Tell your children about a small group of people who taught their children to love God no matter the cost. Remind everyone that, although the Pilgrims were grateful to the Indians for their help, that the first Thanksgiving feast was a celebration of thanksgiving to the living God who had led them each step of the way.

Remember the Pilgrims as people who endured hardship with an eye on future generations. Be strengthened by these robust words of Edward Winslow who wrote,

"How often we have been at the pit's brim, and in danger to be swallowed up: yea, not knowing until afterward that we were in peril? And yet God preserved us. Yea, and from how many that we yet know not of: he that knoweth all things best can tell.

So that when I seriously consider of things, I cannot but think that God hath a purpost to give that land, as an inheritance, to our nation."

Around My Home

A typical day for me may look like this:

Settling down to visit with our aquatic therapist, Amy.

Aquatic therapy has been extremely useful in strengthening Ella's entire body.

She loves it.

Afterwards we go home and take some time to sew.

My eldest is intent on making dresses for all the gals. She's surpassing my skill level.

Then there's more therapy.

Occupational therapy can be tiresome for Ella, but needed.

OT works on fine motor skills and strengthening the upper body.

Ella is able to draw circles and straight lines using a pencil or crayon. She endures being on her hands and knees for a longer period of time. Her back is weak, but we work on improving core areas with items such as a platform swing, exercise ball, and scooter.

I'm also looking into the ABM Method.

Ella's coordination has improved considerably. We are working on life skills such as buttoning up a jacket and writing her name.

Ella is clarifying Marcy's desire to have her place the marble on top of the peg.
Personally, I think she's trying to distract Marcy. ;-)

Marcy is so patient.

I'll be updating you with pictures of Ella working on the iPad. I'll also be posting a list of wonderful applications for special education, occupational therapy, and augmentative communication.

Raising Real Men: A Timberdoodle Review

There is just something about boys.

They have an innate desire to play with castles, kings, and soldiers:

They work hard:

They play hard:

Cold weather doesn't seem to phase them:

Boys who will someday grow up to be men.

If there's anything I've learned in my years of being a mother to boys, is that they are unique and different - but the one thing both my boys have had in common is they love to feel needed.

My favorite thing about The Youngs and Raising Real Men is they understand this need and expound on it throughout the book.

About the Book

Raising Real Men by Hal and Melanie Young is a practical and easy read written from a Christian perspective on issues today's parents face, with biblical suggestions for handling them. The Youngs do a wonderful job sharing topics from principles in play to leadership and authority. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I agree with most of what was written to encourage and motivate parents of boys. It is a straight-forward look into their lives with six boys.

As a mother of boys, I am especially grateful to Hal and Melanie. They helped me understand some issues that needed attention, confirmed areas I've been successful in, and allowed me a look into the ups and downs of their own lives with such honesty and humility.

I love this book and highly recommend it to parents of boys. You'll love it.

Examples in the Home

A woman must have vision to remain steadfast in her role as homemaker, wife, and mother.

Without a clear and precise biblical vision, a woman is tossed here and there by the opinions and pressures of others.

We are not to argue with others regarding our position in the home, but we are to be clear in that position so others cannot convince us otherwise. The best cure for argumentative people is a gentle, light response and purposeful example of godly home living. Proverbs 15:1.

We are to be examples of good housekeeping. A chaotic and disorderly home is not appropriate. A husband may become frustrated and demand that his wife go outside of the home to work since he cannot see the fruit of her hands in the home.

Our daughters and sons may turn away from a biblical truth because they discern hypocrisy.

Friends and acquaintances may question our ability to manage a home. Hence, advising one to put our children in school and go out to work.

Be Intentional. See housework as a blessing and not a chore. Keep your children close to you and teach them to be helpers and not a burden. If we train our children diligently while they are young, we will experience peace when they are older.

When your husband walks in from a hard day's work, give him a minute to settle down. Don't start in with the difficulties of the day. Wait for the proper moment to speak of your concerns.

Get dressed from head to toe. Put on a nice outfit for your family and God. It took me sometime to realize that God does care about my appearance because it reflects my heart.

People will question our position no matter what because we live in a corrupt and confused world, but let's not give anyone room to speak more evil by not living up to our potential as wives, homemakers, and mothers.

I know it is not easy, but if we change our perspective and stop making excuses - we can live a life of order and peace. We can show this world that being home and taking care of our family is an honor and privilege.

Teaching Children to be Grateful for Food

It seems my children are endlessly asking for something to eat. They assume that when they are hungry they can easily fill that need by going into the kitchen. If we are low on food, they assume I can just run out and buy lunch or go to the grocery store. The feeling is one of entitlement and not gratitude.

Hunger is an instinct that demands attention. Grocery stores are filled with food and the streets are lined up with restaurants on every corner. If you have a few dollars and need a bite to eat, then you simply eat. It is far too easy for children to forget they should be thankful for the food placed on their plate. My little one will cry at dinner if she does like what is on her plate. My older children often fuss if they must eat something on their plate. I told my children that only in the land of plenty do children cry over having to eat while other children cry over NOT having anything to eat.

Children need to learn to be thankful for what is given to them. Prayers over food should never become hollow or simply the ritual before diving in to feed your hunger.

Here are possible solutions to encourage your child to become more thankful for his full plate of food.:

The primary goal is to teach a child to be thankful to the Lord for providing the meal on her plate. However, the age of a child may demand more concrete steps before making that connection. Since children are always asking for food, then have them pay for it. Take them grocery shopping and give them a budget for spending money on snacks and lunches for the week. Do not give them more money or make deals to get extra snacks or even extra apples. Allow them the chance to work on a budget and make decisions.

Use your next geography lesson to learn about a missionary your church supports. If possible, have your child contact the missionary or the missionary’s children to discuss the conditions where they live. Allow your child to see that in other countries children do not just hop over to McDonald’s or the grocery store.
Sponsor a Child is another way to give your child a concrete example of how desperate another child is for food and support. I am not associated with Sponsor a Child or an organization such as this, so please check it thoroughly before deciding to support. Get your child involved in picking the child. Make this child part of your daily prayers before meal time. Your child will soon see how blessed she is for having a full plate.

Christmas is coming and there will be requests to adopt a family, get involved with Samaritan’s Purse, or work an evening in a soup kitchen. Whenever my family gets involved in something like this during Christmas, I find my children focus much less on what they want and more on the needs of others.
