Preparing "Meat" for Our Households

"She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household,
and a portion to her maidens."

I have heard this verse so many times, and I have been convicted by it on the days that I do not get myself out of bed early.  Getting up early is my usual practice, and I have already shared with you why I get up when I do.

I also love a home-cooked breakfast, so it is a delight to cook a meal in the mornings!  It isn't always a huge meal--sometimes scrambled eggs and toast, grits and sausage patties, sausage gravy and biscuits, pancakes and bacon, or one of our favorites: "egg muffins".

But this time reading this verse, the Lord impressed on my heart another kind of meat to prepare for my household.  He showed me where I have not been diligent to provide spiritual "meat" for my household in the mornings!  How much more important is it to spend time with our children in His Word, than to spend time preparing and savoring a hearty breakfast.

One fills us for a time, while the other makes us hunger and thirst no more

We need to be prepared to tell our children the Scriptures "when we sit in the house, when we walk along the path, when we lie down, and when we rise up". (Deut. 6:7)

We need to be ready to not just read stories to them, but to help them memorize verses (to write them on their hearts).

Tell them what can be learned from those ancient examples given in Scripture (1 Corinthians 10:11).

And share the gospel with them!

I'll be the first to admit that I don't always prepare ahead of time what we will read or talk about from the Bible each day.  I'm not saying that is all bad--but I do take time making a weekly menu, shopping for the foods needed to prepare breakfast each day of the week, and I make an effort when preparing the meal.

But I have spent NO time making a weekly Bible plan, finding materials to go along with the planned reading or topic, and no time preparing myself to lead or teach my children in those things...and for me, that is bad.

Regarding breakfast--if I am not prepared, we eat whatever I can pull out of a package easiest.  PopTarts, sugary cereal, Oatmeal Creme Pies....junk food.  Now, the Bible is never "junk", but how much better for me is a prepared meal than a thrown together meal?  I get more out of the meal, it lasts my body a lot longer in the day, and it helps my body last longer in life.

Why not do the same with our time with the Lord?

And not only for our children...but for ourselves, as well!  We need to eat meat, too!

One more thing...

As a homeschooler, we often have Bible lessons included in our curriculum, and they are very good.  But Bible is not "just" a subject in schooling our children.  I have begun to do Bible studies outside of our school curriculum, and they are studies that we do even on non-school days.  I want my children to know its importance outside of school lessons.

Share with me in the comments!  What do YOU do for feeding spiritual meat to your household?
