In general, it was a cute movie. I'm a sucker for almost any movie where a little girl sings part of the music (takes me back because singing in musicals was a childhood dream of mine)! While the storyline was light at first, the music was deep and well done. You'll be singing "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" and "Let It Go" for days after watching...especially if yours plays on a loop for 48 hours straight like it did at my house. Friends of mine agreed that we wish there was a wedding at the end of the movie for Anna and her love. But overall, a really cute movie with a sweet ending.
There are a few factors to consider if you are thinking about watching it with your children:
* Mention of magic and powers - this is shown from the beginning as Elsa uses her powers to play with her sister, Anna, and later cause the entire town to be affected by her "sorcery".
* Trolls being called the experts on love, and healing Anna when she was injured by Elsa's powers.
* "No right, no wrong, no rules for me" and Elsa saying she isn't going to be a good girl anymore - not exactly a message you want your children to adopt - but more on this below...
* I didn't care for the scene of Anna punching Hans at the end, but he did deserve it. I'm just not teaching my daughter to handle it that way.
OVERALL...
While this movie does contain the word magic, powers, sorcery, as well as some trolls, there are so many great lessons.
It is a good thing to recognize that the tall, dark, and handsome guy isn't ALWAYS the best one for the girl. In this movie, he is the villain, and does her wrong. A talking snowman helps Anna draw the conclusion that the other guy is the the true love! And how does he do it? By defining "love"...
When Anna says, "I don't even know what love is...", Olaf replies, "Love is...putting someone else's needs before yours!"

Additional talking points you can pull from this movie are these:

When given a ton of rules ("conceal, don't reveal, don't let them see"), it kept relationship away. Likewise, when God sent the Law to His people, it revealed their sinful natures, but it did not draw them closer to Him.
Later, she abandoned all rules, and that left her alone, too. ALL alone. We are free from sin (both the penalty and the power of sin over us) in Christ, but that does not mean we are free to do whatever we want. We are free to live as slaves to God's way! When we try to do it our own way, without trusting His way is best, we are much like Adam and Eve after they were kicked out of the Garden of Eden. All alone in this ugly, sin-filled world.
Don't worry--redemption came! Love conquered all! When love came in, fear was gone. She didn't need rules to do what was right. She didn't need rules to have control over herself (her powers). Love motivated not only the doing right, but also self control over the doing wrong.
Sounds like a familiar storyline, doesn't it? I'm pretty sure that Disney didn't intend for this to be the connection. We are in this world, but not of this world. While we may have all kinds of input coming our way from around us, let's continue to look for Him!

ReplyDeleteThank you for doing such a good job recapping this movie. I have heard a lot about it so appreciated reading about it. I haven't watched it and likely won't because I really don't like even a hint of magic and sorcery since we are warned about it in the Bible. I don't like that things we are warned of in the Bible are made fun or cute so we don't see the danger in it. It also is too easy to think it would be OK to watch since we are hearing and seeing so much about it.
ReplyDeleteWe watched it, and I wish we hadn't. We've been so careful for much of our children's young lives to steer clear of movies promoting magic and wizardry. I think all of these years that Pixar has really filled the Disney void for us because, outside of Brave, which we never watched, they weren't "magical". Imaginative, YES! But no super-natural powers and their message is positive and clean. Now my kids are running around the house singing "Let it Go" just like every other kid in America and pretending they have powers. That's a new thing in our home, and I wish my husband and I had known and paid attention to its content before we just sat the kids in front of it. The new face of Disney animation made it easy to confuse with Pixar, which we've found we can usually trust. A good lesson learned. No matter how "good" something may appear, it's best to evaluate it very carefully before exposing your kids to it because they can't unsee it.
